The Scientist of Death

A new story I have written! Found in full here: http://hitrecord.org/records/505448

The subject of our tale is a female human and her long-time mate. They did not have names, for names were not needed yet. This female and this male had a soul-bond and had chosen not to take any other mates. He assisted their tribe in hunting the wild beasts for food and skin, while she gathered the roots, the herbs and the fruit from the earth and the tree. They shared the products of their labor and were happy.

One not so very special day, the male fell ill and was stricken for three days, and on the 4th day, he lay still, no longer to wake. A great emotion took over the female, starting in the pit of her stomach and taking the breast whole, washing over her whole body, touching her brain, finding shape in a word never before uttered: “Why?”

The word fixed itself to her mind and would not leave. When she lit a fire, she wondered why he was not there to share the warmth. When she ate the food hot from the fire, she wondered why he was not there to share the taste. And soon, with some effort, she was able to ask herself the question behind all of her questions: “Why is he dead, and why am I alive?”

The elders of her tribe were shocked when she finally spoke the question out loud. They were used to the questions “Who?”, “What?”, and “Where?” But this new creation, “Why?” In their disgust, they said that the great Will of the Earth had made it so. Questions such as these would surely rouse the Will into a mood of destruction. “Trust the Will,” they said. But she could not.
